October 3, Oklahoma, Dallas, TX

Today, we leave Tulsa and head for Oklahoma City. The Road is sparsely populated with Historic 66 direction signs and winds through Sapulpa, Kellyville, Bristow and Depew into Stroud. In Stroud, we find the burned-out skeleton of the famous Rock CafĂ©, a Route 66 fixture since 1939. It burned on May 20, 2008 and the rebuild is already underway. Down the road in Chandler, we visit the Route 66 Interpretive Center and are directed to Jerry McClanahan’s gallery a couple of blocks away. Jerry welcomes us into the 1940’s frame house on Manvel Ave. that he is converting into a gallery for his Route 66 paintings. He autographs our copy of his EZ Guide to Route 66 and shows us a work-in-progress painting. Jerry was born in Oklahoma, traveled to and lived in other places, and is now back in Chandler as a resident Route 66 artist. He drives an unrestored 1957 Chevrolet station wagon.

We say good-bye to Jerry and drive on to Arcadia, where we visit the magnificently-restored 1898 round barn. It looks like a twin sister to the Fountain Grove Round Barn in Santa Rosa, except it is not on a hill. The barn is full of Route 66 gifts and curios.

A few miles west of Arcadia, we join Interstate 35 South for Dallas. We will spend the next few days enjoying a break from the trek and a visit with relatives in Dallas.
